Georgian children have turned trash into treasure and their inventive creations are now on display.

Useless household items were given new life in a school competition that allowed students to find new ways of using redundant items. The competition was part of a larger project to reduce the amount of waste in Georgia.

An exhibition of the children’s crafts will be held on August 7, from 6-8pm at Lisi Lake in Tbilisi. Thursday’s exhibition will also display images of waste art by Veronika Richterova - a famous Czech artist – which was temporarily provided by the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Georgia.

Organisers said the purpose of the exhibition was to raise public awareness of the importance of reducing waste, recycling and reusing old items.

The event was part of the US Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Project Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR) initiative. The project, assisted by the Government of Georgia, worked to design a suitable waste management system for Georgia.

Pilot interventions will be implemented in a handful of municipalities to reduce adverse impacts from waste and support a healthier environment. The project is due to be implemented in Georgia’s Kakheti and Adjara regions.

The project is funded by USAID and implemented by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and its local partner CENN.
