Experts recommend  consumers to refrain from purchasing cheap Turkish and Chinese building materials - such as, for example, wallpaper, laminated parquet, paints  which contain harmful elements, including radioactive - for example, a substance radon-222.

Experts criticize cheap Turkish laminate flooring, which is made entirely of chemicals and has nothing to do with wood, so it is very dangerous to health, so this kind of building materials are banned in Europe.

According to Director of "Caucasus Road Project" Jemal  Peradze, this kind of flooring is made from compressed fibers, sawdust and glue, plus they are chemically treated and are dangerous.

"To avoid this threat, it is necessary to buy local products  which are made of wood," - he notes.

Quality of building materials  is also one of the priorities of the Building Code, which is supposed to regulate the norms of construction and issues related to the safety of materials.

The government is working on changes to the Code, one of which, in particular, provides for the issuance of accreditation to companies, certifying that they are working with environmentally friendly materials. The document also states that specialists should  be constantly present at the construction site who will supervise the compliance with  construction standards. The current Code contains  such a rule, but its application depends on the goodwill of the company.

According to the company “Synergy Construction”, the Code obliges to ensure quality, safety, and proper management of the construction, which is impossible without high-quality building materials, respectively, the market demand for low-quality materials will disappear, and there will be the demand for quality products.

According to the head of the Spatial Planning and Building Policy Department at the Ministry of Economy David Gigineishvili, work on the Code is still in progress, and as for the building materials, the main focus will be made on the sustainability of buildings - cement, concrete, rebar, etc.

"In particular, it is necessary to adopt European certificates in Georgia, and in the case of their absence, the certificate about the quality of the materials will be issued by the local laboratory. We should  not think that the Chinese or Turkish materials are priori substandard. If they are certified in Europe, their quality is quite acceptable. As for repair materials, they cannot be regulated by the Building Code. In this regard, a lot depends on the consumers, which have to be interested in the houses repair with high quality materials. We cannot solve this problem by banning imports, and in the end, the market must regulate everything,"- he adds.
