Inflation Rate in Georgia, August 2011(Over July 2011)

In August 2011 the monthly inflation rate in Georgia amounted to 1.1 percent. The following table shows percentage changes in prices for the commodity groups of the consumer basket as well as the relevant contributions to the overall inflation rate.

The overall index reflects a significant change in the price level for the following groups of products and services:

Food and non-alcoholic beverages: The prices increased by 1.6 percent, with the contribution to the overall index equaling 0.69 percentage points. The highest price increases were for the following subgroups: milk, cheese and eggs (10.3 percent); vegetables, including potatoes and other tubers (4.5 percent); fish (3.0 percent). Prices for fruits and grapes decreased by 8.0 percent.

Transport prices increased by 2.2 percent contributing 0.25 percentage points to the overall index. The prices grew by 3.2 percent for transportation services and by 1.9 percent for fuels.

The most significant upward contributions to the annual CPI rate came from increases in the price level for the following groups:

Food and non-alcoholic beverages: The prices increased by 12.5 percent. Accordingly, the contribution of the group to the overall index equaled 5.2 percentage points. The highest price increases were for the following subgroups: meat and meat products (25.8 percent); oils and fats (20.2 percent); sugar and confectionary (19.2 percent); milk, cheese and eggs (18.1 percent); bread and cereals (17.5 percent); fruits and grapes (15.6 percent). The prices for vegetables, including potatoes and other tubers fell by 12.4 percent.

Transport prices rose by 18.3 percent, with the relevant contribution of the group to the overall index equaling 1.9 percentage points. A significant increase in prices was posted for transportation services (23.8 percent) and fuels (20.5 percent).

The prices on communication decreased by 13.7 percent, with the impact on the overall index constituting -0.6 percentage points.
